Uličské Krivé Wooden Greek-Catholic Church of St. Michael Archangel, 1718, National Cultural Monumen

The current wooden Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Uličské Krivé was built in 1718, probably on the site of the original older church. In 1944, during the Second World War, the church was considerably damaged.

The architectural layout of the church gives the impression of massiveness. It is a log building that stands on a low stone foundation. The church has three parts, three rooms, two towers with two simple three-arm crosses made of metal. The towers contain three bells, one of which dates from the early 19th century, specifically from 1811.

The interior of the church is clearly dominated by a richly carved five-row iconostasis, which is a national cultural monument. The iconostasis dates back to the 18th century, with some icons dating back even earlier, to the 16th and 17th centuries. The main row contains the icons of St. Bishop Nicholas, a Virgin Hodegetria, Christ the Teacher and an icon of St. Michael the Archangel. In the middle of the main row are the double-winged Czar doors, where 12 medallions of the Tree of Jesse, thus Christ’s family tree, are atypically depicted together.

The iconostasis was restored in 1988 and re-installed in 1991.

The wooden church in Uličské Krivé also has on its side walls several rare icons, such as icons of St. Michael the Archangel and the Virgin Hodegetria with klejma (small pictures) from the 16th and 17th centuries, which were probably decorations from the older church. The Mandylion on the windowsill comes from this period. One interesting feature of the church is the paints of the icons of St. Basil the Great and St. John Chrysostom.
