The wooden Greek Catholic church of the Encounter of the Lord with Simeon in Kožany was built in the second half of the 18th century. It is one of the oldest preserved monuments in the Eastern Slovakia and thanks to the rare interior decoration and interesting iconostasis, it is one of the most valuable sacral objects.

The three-part log building consists of an altar room, a main nave and a vestibule. The complicated roof features a tower with three bells. One of them dates from the Gothic period, specifically from 1406, thus making the church a rarity among wooden temples in Slovakia.

Inside the church you can find an iconostasis with paintings depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments and icons from the 18th century. You should not overlook the window bars hand-forged in the Gothic style, a decorative chandelier, a wooden cup, candlesticks and other religious items inside.

The wooden church in Kožany has gone through some extensive renovations. The interior and its decorations were restored between 1965 and 1970, the exterior thirty years later.

The church stands out not only thanks to its decoration, architecture and history, but also thanks to its interesting location appreciated by geocachers. The church still holds services and masses.
