Hanušovský viaduct
The viaduct, up to 400 meters long, proudly rises above the town of Hanušovce nad Topľou. It is a large construction – the largest of its kind in the whole Central Europe.
The construction serves as a railway connection between the cities of Prešov and Humenné and took tons of steel and months of hard work to complete. It is as heavy as 134 train wagons. The pillars and abutments used up to 14,000 m3 of concrete masonry and because of them, 15,000 m3 of soil had to be excavated. The highest pillar measures 28 meters. In some places, the bridge is 40 meters high.
However, even the size of the viaduct did not protect it from the retreating German troops during World War II. The viaduct was almost completely destroyed back then. The structures were cut, dropped from pillars and lay twisted down in the valley.
Fortunately, this construction was restored after the war and put back into operation. Today, the viaduct near Hanušovce nad Topľou is not only an ornament of the region, but also a necessary part of the railway transport system.
