Kriváň (High Tatras)

The climb to Kriváň (2,494 m) is extremely attractive and popular.

Kriváň is an impressive peak in the western part of the High Tatras. From the top it goes down several ridges, of which only the southern and southwestern ridge are popular with tourists. Kriváň was visited by well-known pioneers of the Tatras.

The first winter climb was made here in 1884 by Theodor Wundt and the mountain guide J. Horvay. In memory of the ascent of the Saxon King Frederick Augustus II in 1840, Hungarian monarchists erected an obelisk on the peak, which was soon destroyed by Slovak patriots on one of their traditional “national walks”. The first of them took place on August 16, 1841 and was attended by Ľudovít Štúr and Michal M. Hodža, among others. The greatest pilgrimage was organized by Štefan M. Daxner in the year 1861. Since 1955, the traditional ascents to Kriváň have been dedicated to the SNP and its heroes. As a symbolic hill of the Slavs and the freedom of the Slovaks, Kriváň became an important motive of the poetry of Štúrovci group, and still retains its position in poetry and song creation today.
