Crypt in Osadné

Tourists not only from all corners of Slovakia, but from all over the world, are more and more drawn by the unique site in the village of Osadné, in the Snina district. This is a crypt for soldiers who died in the hard fighting in the surrounding areas during the First World War.

A noble act and a clever idea

In the 1920s the Orthodox Church was oppressed. The faithful in Osadné were not granted permission when they wanted to build a house of worship. Nevertheless, the local clergyman of the time refused to give up and sought other ways to build the church. At that time there was an organization called “Jednota” (Unity) in Prague, which took care of burying Russian soldiers. Its chairwoman, Nadežda Kramářová, advised local believers to build the church as a memorial to Russian soldiers.

In October 1928 a financial collection was permitted for this purpose. A total of 15,911 crowns was collected, and even then Czechoslovak President T. G. Masaryk reportedly said he would also contribute. In 1930 the church was completed and consecrated.

According to records from military archives, a total of 1,025 soldiers from military cemeteries and scattered graves from the surrounding area were exhumed in 1933. The inhabitants of Osadné also helped with the exhumations.

The remains of those 1,025 Russian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers were stored in a crypt under the altar part of the church. The crypt is the largest below-church burial site in Slovakia. The grave measures 1.5 m × 4 m and is 7 m deep (reportedly up to 11 m). The room is decorated with Orthodox icons and information boards.

Near the crypt is a board with the text:

“Here rest in the Lord 1025 of the warriors fallen during the world war 1914-1915, 23 known by name and 1002 unknown”.

At present there are 61 names known.

A godly act broke the ice

The magnificence of the crypt also motivated the administrators of the surrounding military cemeteries to move their military remains to Osadné. The remains of another 1,473 exhumed Russian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers from the cemeteries in Osadné, Nižná and Vyšná Jablonka were put into two shafts in the current local cemetery near the Uniate church. These were predominantly soldiers who died in heavy fighting during Kornilov's breakthrough and the Easter Battle in the Carpathians.

The crypt has also been the subject of documentary filmmakers

The crypt and life in Osadné were the subject of director and documentary filmmaker Marko Škop, who made the film “Osadné”. The documentary has seen great success and has brought awareness of the crypt to even more people.

The crypt, a souvenir shop and information centre are open nonstop.
