Levočské Mountains
The peaks of Levočské Mountains in the north of Slovakia reach a height of 1,000 - 1,200 m above sea level (Siminy, Ihla, Repisko, Javorina). The highest mountain is Čierna hora (1,290 m above sea level) located in the rain shadow of the Tatras (less precipitation).
Levočské Mountains is interwoven with a dense network of forests trails and asphalt roads popular with cyclists from the vicinity.
One of the traditional destinations for trips to this area is a memorial to the victims of World War II, located below the hill Javorina, at an altitude of 1,134 m. This memorial stands on the site where a Soviet transport plane was shot down by a German fighter during the Slovak National Uprising. Of the 16 people on the board, only five survived the tragedy - four members of the Soviet garrison and one Czechoslovak soldier.
Near the monument there is a tourist shelter with a beautiful view not only of the Levočské Mountains, but also of the High and Low Tatras. The starting point for hiking trips to this area is the town of Levoča.
