Altar of Master Paul and the historical center of Levoča

The Spiš town of LEVOČA is said to be "the brightest stone in the crown of Spiš“. Levoča is home to the highest Gothic wooden altar in the world and other interesting monuments surrounded by relatively well-preserved city walls.

The center of ancient Levoča is a large rectangular square with a Roman Catholic parish Basilica of St. James from the 14th century, which is one of the most important sacral buildings in Slovakia. Particularly valuable is the interior of the church, which is a unique museum of medieval sacral art.

The late Gothic main altar of St. James is 18.62 meters high - the tallest of its kind in the world. The altar was made of linden wood between 1507 to 1517 in the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča. Master Paul allegedly made one of the twelve statues of the apostles in the beautiful composition The Last Supper in his own image.

Adjacent to the parish church is the building of the former Levoča town hall with arcades built after a devastating fire in 1550. It is one of the top buildings of secular Renaissance architecture in Slovakia. The square also features a cage of shame from the 16th century, which was used in the past for public shaming. The central square is lined with more than 50 remarkable burgher and patrician houses.

At first glance, the Renaissance Thurzo House, which was given a neo-Renaissance sgraffito facade in 1904, is the most interesting house in the street. The former Town Hall houses the Spiš Museum and its interesting exhibitions.
