Historical center in Spišská Sobota

From the historical point of view, Spišská Sobota is the most important part of Poprad and the starting point to explore the Tatras. Today it is one of the best preserved medieval urbanistic units in Slovakia.

The heart of the unique urban complex is the triangular square, which is bordered by terraced houses. Roman Catholic Church of St. George was built some time before the year 1273 in the late Romanesque style. In 1464 it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. The church has five Gothic altars. Late Gothic Altar of St. George and St. Anton were created between 1503 and 1520 in the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča.

Next to the church there is a Renaissance bell tower from 1598 and a Baroque statue of Immaculata from 1772. In 1777 the builders incorporated the building of the Evangelical Church into the terraced houses structure surrounding the square. In its interior there is a valuable altarpiece Christ on the Mount of Olives which dates back to 1852.

Today the romantic Spišská Sobota is a popular stop for tourists who want to enjoy good food or spend the night in one of the beautifully renovated and stylish guest houses.
