One of the oldest monasteries and places of pilgrimage in Slovakia, also known as the “Ruthenian Devín”, was built in the 14th century, where a blind beggar miraculously recovered.

This romantic ruin is today a frequent destination for trips to the nearby Čertov kameň (The Devil’s Stone) hill.

The village of Krásny Brod lies in an area that in the past was on an important path from Hungary and Subcarpathia to Galicia. One of these roads led through Medzilaborce and the Lupkov Pass.

Miraculous Spring

Tradition says that a blind pilgrim, Michal Spalinský, was miraculously cured at a spring in Krásny Brod, and he then painted a picture. The monastery, consecrated to the Holy Spirit, thus became a place where people came to be healed and later also to gather at markets. The monastery in Krásny Brod became an important centre of spirituality and culture.

During the First World War, the monastery in Krásny Brod was destroyed by Russian and Austro-Hungarian troops, and it has since stood in ruins. The Order of the Basilians eventually built a new monastery, which was consecrated on 2 June 2002.

Forgiveness celebrations are held in Krásny Brod each year on the feast of the Descent of the Holy Spirit and the Intercession – Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God.
