Red Monastery Museum
The Carthusian monastery in the picturesque Pieniny hides gothic treasures and valuable expositions. You can also see the extremely rare herbarium of the "flying monk" Cyprian from 1766.
In the heart of the picturesque Pieniny, you cannot miss the architectural gem, the Carthusian monastery, which, thanks to its red roof, was named Red Monastery.
There are several museum expositions in the monastery. The most important exhibit is the herbarium of the brother Cyprian from 1766. The rare work of art is bound in dark leather and contains 283 pressed specimens. For each plant, the name is given in Latin, German, Greek, Polish and Slovak. The herbarium also features Cyprian’s records of diseases and their treatment.
In the museum, visitors can also admire the collection of original medical showcases from the 18th century, medical scales made in Amsterdam in the 17th century and a copy of the first Slovak pharmacopoeial literature (the so-called Bratislava’s Torkoš taxa laborum) from 1745.
Part of the exposition is the Gothic Church of St. Anthony from the end of the 14th century and rare artistic and historical monuments of the Red Monastery and northern Spiš.
In front of the entrance to the monastery is a park which was declared a protected area of Pieniny Lipa in 1972. It protects 19 old rare lime trees.
During the summer tourist season, the Red Monastery comes alive with a variety of events, concerts, children's performances and entertainment programs for visitors.
