Valley of Death
The Poddukliansky region is closely tied to the culture and history of Ruthenians and Ukrainians in Slovakia. The region’s war history, which you can literally touch, has left strong traces here.
The area was affected by a great many horrors of war during the First and Second World Wars. Wandering through the region, one senses the strong atmosphere and is reminded of its war history, which can no longer be repeated.
Among the strongest of such places is the Valley of Death near the village of Kapišová, where the hardest fighting played out with a massive deployment of tanks. One can still hide in the bunkers preserved in the surrounding forests.
You certainly won’t want to miss a tour of the reconstructed bunkers (so-called zemľaniek) in the forest above the village of Vyšný Komárnik. In 1944 this was the site of staff and command of the 3rd Czechoslovak Brigade.
