Starina Reservoir
Within Poloniny National Park is the Starina reservoir, which supplies drinking water to almost all of eastern Slovakia and is the largest drinking water reservoir in Central Europe. In addition, it helps reduce flooding below the dam and ensures minimum flows on the Cirocha below the reservoir.
History
Its history starts in 1980, when due to the construction of the reservoir the displacement of the Ruthenian villages of Starina, Veľká Poľana, Zvala, Smolník, Dara, Ostružnica and Ruská began. In 1988, the Starina dam was already in place
Remnants of the villages and historical monuments
From the former village of Ostružnica, the cemetery of the fallen from the First World War and the ruins of a church from 1806 are still preserved. A similar cemetery from Smolník has also been preserved.
In the village of Ruské there is a memorial in the form of a military cemetery from the First World War, as well as a chapel. A well preserved stone road, a technical cultural monument, the so-called Porta Rusica, leads from the end of the village.
The village of Starina lies below the surface of the reservoir.
