War Cemetery in Palota

Palota is a border village in the Medzilaborce district. The first written mention of the village comes from the year 1330.

Not far from the village is the Lupkov Pass, which is known for Lupkov railway tunnel. The tunnel and the railway were of strategic importance during times of war. The railway line passing through the Lupkov Pass was the main supply route of the Austro-Hungarian army in Galicia.

Above the village, near the state border with Poland, is a military cemetery from the First World War. Care for this cemetery after the war fell to the gendarme station in Vydraň.

The war cemetery in Palota is located on a small hill amidst beautiful surroundings. It is architecturally one of the more interesting locations around – the graves are placed in the shape of a rectangle that ends on one side in an arch.

There are 28 graves in the cemetery, 22 of which are individual graves, 4 common graves and 2 mass graves. Each common grave contains two bodies. All graves on the preserved historical outline are marked with Arabic numerals; only the mass graves are registered with Roman numerals.
