Sobień Castle

The ruins of Sobień Castle are one of several medieval defence bases in south-eastern Poland. There were never too many fortifications in this area, because these areas were sparsely populated.  All of the castles that still exist in the area were built during the Renaissance, whether in Lesk, Sanok or the non-existent Baal defensive Castle Baal in Baligród.  The San Valley was previously guarded by the Sobień Castle, built on a relatively high hill (450 m).

Medieval Sobień was a royal castle guarding the trade route along the San River. The castle was built on the orders of King Casimir the Great in 1340. At the turn of the 14th and 15 century a fort was built in the shape of an irregular quadrilateral. The residential wing was in the lower part of the complex along the south-eastern part of the walls. The castle only functioned for something less than 100 years. It is assumed that sometime in 1474 or 1512 the castle was destroyed by a Hungarian invasion. Since then, Sobień Castle has been in ruins and its state has deteriorated over the years. Both world wars contributed to its complete destruction.

From the ruins of the castle complex, which is a protected area, you’ll have a beautiful view over the surrounding area.
