Zemplínske Hámre – museum and educational trail
The village of Zemplínske Hámre (hammer mill) lies in the valley of the Barnov stream and 5 km from Snina. It is exceptional for its museum and the Hámor educational trail with technological monuments.
The original Josefsthal settlement was founded in 1809 in connection with the mining and processing of iron ore under Sninský kameň Mountain and was also known under the names Hutta, Jozef Hámra, Pustá Hámra and Sninské Hámre. Several hammer mills, a charcoal blast furnace and ironworks were gradually built here, which at the end of the 19th century were among the most important producers of iron ore in the Zemplín region.

Zemplínske Hámre is a starting point for hikes in the Vihorlat Mountains, which offer the attractive Sninský kameň and Morské oko peaks. A marked hiking path leads directly from the village to Sninský kameň. Above the valley of the Čierny potok stream, in the quarry area, is a natural cliff formation of volcanic origin called Babia skala, which is a favourite site for climbers.
The “Snina narrow-gauge”, “Stakčín narrow-gauge” and “Planet trail” cycling paths connect Zemplínske Hámre with the surrounding municipalities of Snina, Stakčín and Kolonica.
Zemplínske Hámre is also home to a museum with expositions of industrial production and ethnography, an information centre and the Hámor educational trail, which takes visitors through technical monuments and points of interest in the village from the time of mining of iron ores and the production and processing of iron and other metals.
The museum in Zemplínske Hámre is set up in a stone building – the oldest building in the 19th century village – which originally served as accommodation for the ironworks management. Since the mid-19th century this building has been used as an inn and then later as a municipal service centre.
The Hámor educational trail connects the restored monuments and historically important sites related to the former industrial activity of the Josefsthal settlement built at the foot of the Vihorlat Mountains – the mining and processing of iron ore, the production of charcoal and the transport of wood.
Múzeum je výnimočné najmä vystavenými strojmi, štôlňami, bucharmi a inými charakteristickými exponátmi. Expozícia priemyselnej výroby a etnografie je vytvorená v spolupráci s viacerými múzeami vrátane Baníckeho múzea Pro Gonzengergwerk Sargans vo Švajčiarsku.
The educational trail familiarizes visitors with events related to the establishment of the settlement and presents the way of life in the past and the interesting architectural elements of stone masonry, which have not been preserved elsewhere in the Zemplín region, as well as a sophisticated system of canals built for the water mills and many others. The Hámor educational trail has 14 stops and is 6.8 km long.
