The Orthodox Synagogue on Okružná Street in Prešov was built at the end of the 19th century.

Even though it has relatively austere exterior facades, it hides true gems inside. As the synagogue is the most beautiful functional synagogue in all Slovakia, Jews from Los Angeles tried to acquire and transport the synagogue to the USA in the early 1990s.

Its richly decorated interiors with fully preserved inventory are among the most attractive gems of the Jewish cultural heritage. The synagogue in Prešov is still used as a prayer house. In addition, it also functions as a museum – it houses a permanent exhibition of the Museum of Jewish Culture, which introduces visitors to the so-called Barkány's collection of Judaica.

The synagogue served its purpose until 1942. In the spring and summer of that year, together with the adjoining area, it became a meeting place for Jews of Prešov immediately before deportations began.

During the occupation of Prešov, the German army set up mansions and garages in the synagogue. After the liberation, it was furnished as a kitchen for returnees. After the necessary repairs, it was consecrated in October 1948. Since then, it has served as the only place of prayer to a small Jewish community in Prešov.

In August 1991, a monument to more than 6,000 victims of the Holocaust from Prešov and the surrounding area was unveiled in the courtyard of the synagogue right in front of the entrance in the presence of the highest Slovak state officials.
