Open-Air Museum of Ukrainian Culture in Svidník
The skanzen, or open-air museum, of Ukrainian Culture in Svidník is an experience for anyone, regardless age. Over an area of 11 ha there are 50 objects of folk architecture, including thatched cottages, a mill, a tavern, and a wooden church, among others.
The open-air ethnographic exhibition opened for the public in 1982. It gives visitors a comprehensive picture of the basic living conditions of the Ukrainians of Slovakia in past historical periods. Typical monuments of folk architecture and housing from north-eastern Slovakia are concentrated here.
One part of the open-air museum in Svidník is a village school, where pupils learned in one common class. The teacher also had modest lodgings in the small building.
The open-air museum in Svidník breathes history. It takes visitors back to the past, making them feel as if they have travelled through time. The picturesque area is complemented by enchanting nature and views of the surroundings. Folk festivals are regularly held in the nearby amphitheatre. The best-known are the traditional Festival of Culture of the Ukrainians - Ruthenians of Slovakia (in June) and the Ruthenian Festival (in May).
