Herlian geyser

The Herlian geyser differs from the classical geysers by being situated in volcanic mountains with volcanic activity that has ceased and by the fact that it was artificially activated by a borehole 404.5 m deep, as well as by low-temperature water. The birth of the Herlián geyser can be attributed to the 19th-century heyday of the local baths, for which it was necessary to provide enough healing mineral water.

The time between eruption periods depends on the precipitation activity. It is shorter with higher precipitation and vice versa. The energy that causes the eruption is carbon dioxide, partly from volcanics and partly from Mesozoic carbonate formations. According to the average eruptive activity data, the Herliana geyser has erupted over 40 000 times in its 120 years of activity, and in this time period 20 million m3 of mineralised water has been ejected from the earth's interior during eruptive activity.

Herliansky geyser is located in the village of Herľany.
