More about the trip

Three ridges radiate from the gable's triangular pyramid, which towers high above its surroundings. Since 1941 it has been accessible by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica, making it the most frequented peak in the Tatras. The cableway overcomes the height difference of over 1 700 m and transports tourists to an altitude of 2 634 m above sea level. In 1957 a television repeater station was built and in 1965 a high voltage power line from the Skalnata valley.

On Lomnickom Peak there is an Observatory, which today serves the Hydrometeorological Institute and since 1962 there is also the Physical Astronomical Observatory of the Slovak Academy of Sciences on the Peak. Lomnicky Peak is the highest place in Slovakia inhabited by service workers. Since 1957, for several years there was also a post office on Lomnický štít. Letter parcels with its postmark are of considerable collector's value today. In 2006, the buffet in the station building was rebuilt into the Dedo café. Suites were added and in case of emergency situations (cable car closure due to sudden bad weather or technical reasons) there are emergency rooms in the building for a longer stay of 45 people. Since 2008, the programme for visitors to the peak has been enriched by a tour of the botanical garden, where all the plants are in their original habitats and information boards have been added.

In good weather, the top of Lomnický štít offers a unique circular view. With good visibility, it is possible to see over the Belianske Tatras to the Polish lowlands, while in the opposite direction, less than a fifth of the territory of Slovakia fits into the field of view of the human eye.

FROM HISTORY

The funicular from Tatranská Lomnica to Lomnický štít was built at the instigation of the director of the State Spa Tatranská Lomnica, Juraj Orsagh, who pushed for its construction as early as 1936. The opening ceremony took place in 1941. The cableway route has two parts: from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnate pleso with the Start intermediate station, which in the past served as a starting point for the toboggan and bobsled run to the Grandhotel Praha. Interestingly, the material for the construction of the cable car was brought to Skalnaté pleso by horses, to Lomnický štít by people who carried almost 300 tonnes of material to the top to a height of 2,634 m. The cable car was built by about 70 people from Lendak, Spišská Bela and Kežmarok. One assembly rope was carried in the hands of 36 porters to the peak. The cableway buildings were carved out of stone used from a nearby quarry.

The second highest peak is Lomnicky Peak with an altitude of 2633 m above sea level, which is the only peak in the High Tatras that can be reached by cable car from Tatranská Lomnica.

There are several hiking trails leading to the top of Lomnický štít:

The easiest and most popular of which is the output from Lomnický saddle, which is also suitable for beginners. The cable car will take you to Skalnate Pleso, from where you can take a chairlift to Lomnický sedlo.

Elevation: from Lomnický sedlo 443 m

Difficulty: easy

Duration: 4 hours

The other the most popular, but technically quite a bit more demanding is ascent along the Jordan Way with the starting point from Téry's hut, through Jordan's crevice, traverse of the Last Tower to Sedielka pod Lomnickým, from there to the very top by a section secured by chains. Descent to the Lomnický saddle, from there down by chairlift to Skalnaté Pleso and by cable car to Tatranská Lomnica.

Elevation: approx. 1400 metres

Duration approx. 4-5 hours

Less used ascent routes lead from Zelené pleso through Copper footbridges, the German ladder and the Copper footbridges or the route through Téry's roundabout.
