Regetov peat bog

The Regetov Peat Bog National Nature Reserve is located northeast of the village of Regetovka. It is covered with a continuous layer of peat bogs and extends to a depth of 9 metres. A variety of sedge communities grow on the edges of the peat bog.

The peatland is particularly on the western side of the heavily waterlogged by a creek, which has been modified and partially diverted in the past. The tree cover is dominated by sticky alder, ash willows and other species of bog-peat biotopes. The meadow communities are dominated by three-leaved sedge, carnivorous sundew, crested fern, May fern and continuous stands of sedges and mosses. Similar communities are unparalleled in eastern Slovakia and are a floristic locality of national importance. The reserve is also a site of European importance (part of the Natura 2000 network). The area is part of the Regetovské peat bog nature trail

Peatland, as one of the few NPRs, needs constant human intervention. As it turned out after a few years, mowing is very important in the protected area because it has helped to rejuvenate the alder stands.

The most important task in terms of the protection of the Regetov peat bog is the introduction of a water regime and such protective measures that will prevent the extinction of the meadow-peat bog communities to the detriment of the dense alder forest.

Flora This protected nature reserve is formed by a meadow community of meadow sedge and meadow sedge. Wandering through the peat bog it is also possible to come across the carnivorous sundew, the rare crested fern or the marsh fritillary. The shrubby community of ash willow and smaller groups of bog-peat alders with rare and well-preserved meadow vegetation, such as those found on Regetov peat bog, have not been found anywhere else in eastern Slovakia so far.
