Sundial in Bijacovce

In the village of Bijacovce (Levoca district) we can find a vertical sundial located on the Church of All Saints.

This clock is complete in the shape of a square with broken corners. The painted sundial consists of a dial of Arabic numerals from seven o'clock in the morning to five o'clock in the afternoon, and is divided by the half-hour. At the top we find a decorative ribbon, in which the Latin text UNA HARUM ULTIMA UTINAM SECUNDA is placed. The inscriptions ECCLESIA RENOVATA and ANNO DOMINI 1955 can still be found on the sides. The indicator is located in the centre of the sun with a human face.

We evaluate the condition of the sundial positively, as it is in a very well-preserved state. The location is suitable, they are distinctive and the visitor immediately notices them when entering the church premises.

The Church of All Saints was built between 1250 and 1260 in the early Gothic style. The early Gothic single-nave church with a square presbytery, a northern sacristy and an imaginary tower is situated on a hill on the outskirts of the village. Around 1400 the church was rebuilt and the interior decorated with high quality frescoes. The building was further modified in 1747 and several times during the 19th century. In 1960 the frescoes were restored.
