Rare habitats and biodiversity. The Plavečské gravel pits near the village of Plaveč are also a rare area. The island areas it creates are home to various species of fauna and flora.
Since 1990, the Plaveč gravel pits have also been among the protected natural creations. The island areas were created by natural reclamation after gravel extraction. The gravel pits surround the banks of the Poprad River and the adjacent banks between the villages of Orlov and Plaveč.
Natural heritage is being preserved for the future of Slovakia, but also for the European Union and future generations. Habitats are the reason for the protection of the Plaveč gravel pits. Mountain watercourses with woody vegetation with grey willow or lowland and foothill mown meadows. It is these that create good conditions for the life of species such as the water beaver, river otter, coastal bat, Danube kingfisher, white-headed grebe and representatives of various water birds. It is precisely because of these rare habitats and the preservation of biodiversity that the Plavečské Pebble Bogs belong to the Natura 2000 network of protected areas of the EU Member States.
