At the time of its creation, it was the best medium tank, combining good mobility, armour and firepower. The T-34/85 tank, also called Janosik can be found in the town park behind the castle in Kežmarok. It commemorates the liberation of the town during the Second World War, when it was one of the best assault ground mechanisms.
For the first time, the T-34 tank was used during World War II and gained great recognition even among the Germans. It was distinguished by its simplicity of production, which allowed to outnumber the German machines. Interestingly, it was possible to complete the T-34/85 tank in 40 hours, if all the materials were available, of course.
It was placed in the park in 1969 on the 700th anniversary of the founding of the town of Kežmarok. The base of the tank consists of a stone foundation on which the text is located:
"May this memorial become a symbol of the heroism of the members of the 1st Czechoslovak Independent Tank Brigade formed in the USSR, which, after heavy fighting during the liberation of our homeland, re-formed in these places in Kežmarok in January and February 1945, in order to be able to intervene in further battles against the fascists.."
Every year, commemorative rallies and wreath-laying ceremonies are held at the tank to honour fallen heroes from around the world.
