Jiří Wolker was one of the most distinctive and talented Czech poets of the early 20th century, an important representative of poetism. In 1923 he was treated in room 33 for tuberculosis in the sanatorium of doctor Michal Guhr in Tatranská Polianka. Later, however, his health deteriorated sharply and a recurrence of tuberculosis was accompanied by meningitis. He died at the beginning of 1924 after leaving Tatranská Polianka.
Ponds near the sanatorium are named after the poet, as a memory of his stay in the Tatras. At the northern pond there is also a memorial plaque with an epitaph written by Wolker 36 days before his death. This is a replacement of the original, now lost, plaque, which was installed in 1949 by the Czech Academic Society in Prague on the 25th anniversary of the poet's death.
The lakes are located about a hundred metres above the sanatorium on the left and are reached by a park path with benches. They are two small connected lakes with a small bridge and a beautiful view of Gerlachovský štít.
