Discover wood carvings in the suburban recreational forests of Poprad-Kvetnica! The municipal district of Poprad Kvetnica lies south of the city centre and the suburban forests are spread out on the hills of the Goat's Backs.
Another novelty in the form of animals carved out of wood will make a walk in Poprad's urban forests more interesting for visitors. During a walk through the forest paths, visitors will be able to see a wolf, bear, wild boar, eagle, owl, salamander, frog, squirrels, mouflon, snail, fish and even a bat near the old mining shed.
HOW TO GET TO THE FLOWER GARDEN?
You can get here easily individual transport on the road number I/66 - from Poprad in the direction of Rožňava, or you can use one of the numerous taxi services operating in the city (the price for a ride to Kvetnica from Poprad should not exceed € 7,-).
Public transport here is provided by Tatra Expres (SAD Poprad) through intercity bus lines - the timetable can be found at www.cp.sk. The buses start at the bus station and also pass through the stop at OC MAX on Rožňavská cesta.
By bike/scooter/skates ......
From Poprad to Kvetnica there are up to 2 cycle paths - from the Juh 3 housing estate you will approach Zverník and from the Juh 5 housing estate you will reach Tancuľka. You can rent a shared bicycle, e-bike, electric scooter or scooter directly in Poprad.
Hiking enthusiasts can make a trip to Kvetnica directly from the town centre, where a green marked trail leads to the top of Zámčisko. Due to the distance of 9.5 km, it is necessary to calculate the time of about 2.5 hours one way for such a move.
HOW DO YOU GET TO THE INDIVIDUAL WOODCUTS ?
TO THE BEAR...
One of the most affordable wood carvings is the bear. It is located on the so-called Tancuľka, under the forest above Jedľová and Dubová streets, which make up the newly built individual house construction on Kvetnice. From the bear it is only a short walk to the so-called Little Quarry, where you will find 3 more wooden animals and if you go up the hill through the forest, on the edge of the cliff above the Little Quarry you will come across a photo frame with squirrels.
FISH, AN OWL, A SNAIL AND A PHOTO FRAME WITH SQUIRRELS CAN BE FOUND IN A SMALL QUARRY
The small quarry, or old flooded quarry, is a popular resting place. You can see fish near the water surface, a snail smiling on the playground and an owl sitting on a pike. If you take the path over the water, you will see 2 squirrels in the photo frame at the best vantage point to take your picture. From the photo frame through the woods down the slope to the north, you can easily reach the aforementioned Tancułka, where the bear resides, in a few minutes.
A BAT HIDES NEAR A MINING SHED
If you want to get to the bat on foot from the Small Quarry, the mining nature trail, which starts at the information boards, will take you to it in about 20 minutes. If you would like to shorten your walk, just start from the inhabited part of Kvetnice near the sanatorium - e.g. from the bus stop towards the former fire station and continue along the forest path for a while. In just a few minutes you will find yourself at the bat located near the entrance to the ancient mining tunnel Strieborná.
WILD BOAR AND MOUFLON CAN BE SEEN AT THE MENAGERIE - BOTH WOODEN AND REAL!
If you walk to them from Malý Quarry, after crossing the main road I/66 you will take the asphalt road through the forest, which will lead you to the fenced military area and then to a small parking lot. As you pass the barrier, you will reliably encounter a wild boar on your way alongside the animal preserve. From the wild boar you can continue the easy walk to the mouflon, or you can extend your hike and visit the wolf.
A MOUFLON SUPERVISES THE HERD IN THE PEN
To reach the mouflon, continue your walk along the same path further up the hill and when you pass a shelter with a well and a nice viewpoint at the top, a mouflon will be waiting for you at the bottom of the slope after a few minutes of walking. If you plan a longer hike, you can continue on to the salamander along the Kvetnica Nature Trail (marked with green). The latter is hidden really in the heart of the Flower massif.
SALAMANDER PREFERS MOIST FOREST BACKDROPS
Do you know the location under the "Wheels"? The salamander and the wolf are in the most difficult to reach places. The trails to them require more time, but you can make a beautiful hike at the same time. You can find the salamander on the bench together with the frog in the southern part of the Flower massif, at a small turn off the Flower Nature Trail, which is marked with a green sign. This unknown location boasts a beautiful canyon with a small waterfall. The best access to it is from the mining plant on Kvetnica (next to the main road opposite Kameňolom Dubina), or from the sanatorium, from both of these starting points the journey to the salamander along the nature trail takes about 1.5 hours.
THE LONE WOLF IS THE GUARDIAN OF THE FLOWER GARDEN
You can find a beautiful wood carving under the highest peak of the massif - Krížová 941 m above sea level. It is located at the crossroads of a nature trail with a forest path and there is also a hunting lodge nearby. One of the two access options starts at Kvetnica near the sanatorium, first following the yellow trail from the Circle of Health. At the crossroads "Pod Krížovou" follow the signpost and turn onto the nature trail towards Krížová - follow the green trail. This whole hike will take you approximately 60 minutes one way. The other interesting route to the wolf is also along the Nature Trail from Zverník, and together with the path from the parking lot it will take you about 50 minutes to reach the wolf.
AN EAGLE LOOKS INTO THE HORNÁD BASIN
From the mining plant on Kvetnica (next to the main road opposite the Dubina Stone Quarry) you can climb up the yellow trail towards the forest and after about 10 minutes you will get a beautiful view of the entire Hornád basin and also a view of the king of birds - the majestic eagle.
A map with the location of the wood carvings in Kvetnica can be found at www.regiontatry.sk or www.visitpoprad.sk
In addition to the wood carvings, we recommend taking advantage of some of the fire pits set up at the Flower House, children will love playing on the playground at Little Loma, or try the barefoot trail that has been created near the playground.
