The European beech, also known as Fagus sylvatica in Latin, is a deciduous, deciduous tree and one of the most common trees in Europe today. It grows to a height of 40 metres with a widely spreading crown. Beeches are generally an undemanding tree species in oceanic climates with sensitivity to drought, frosts and chemical air pollutants.
A beautiful example of a happy tree is also the beech tree in Stary Smokovec, standing proudly in front of the building of the Mountain Rescue Service, which also houses the Tatra Information Office, for several decades. In 2017, the State Forests of TANAP estimated its age at approximately 70 years. It is a slow-growing and long-lived forest beech (Fagus sylvatica Pendula). Its beautiful, gracefully drooping form, with branches down to the ground, makes it a remarkable and special pest-resistant plant. The only thing that gives it a problem is salt for de-icing the roads and therefore, its location in the High Tatras, where such spreading is forbidden, is more than advantageous. Paradoxically, however, this most common tree species is not very common in the High Tatras. According to the TANAP Administration, it is a peculiarity compared to other mountain ranges in Slovakia and beech grows here only to a lesser extent.
The height to which such a beech can grow is 20 metres, and the Tatra one is already about 13 metres, although it is slowly growing in width. The thickness of its trunk in the chest width already reaches a respectable 250 centimetres and perhaps that is why it has managed to cope with all storms, even the worst one in 2004. It can be found in the series of 30 cases of Major Zeman called Tatra Pastorals from 1978 and today one can sit under it even in the rain, as its crown resembles a large, green umbrella not only in shape but also in functionality.
