The Church of St. Alexander Nevsky in Presov is the main cathedral church of the Orthodox Church in Slovakia.
It was built in 1946-1950 from the collections of the faithful. With the blessing of Metropolitan Jelevferij of Prague, it was consecrated by Father Archimandrite Andrej (Kolomackij) on 11 February 1950. It is dedicated to Prince St. Alexander Nevsky, a fighter for the Orthodox faith in Holy Russia.
The Church of St. Alexander Nevsky is built in the spirit of the traditions of Orthodox Russian architecture. It is decorated with five onion-shaped domes, reminiscent of the typical architecture of old Tsarist Russia.
The interior of the cathedral is modest, decorated with a few icons. It is in the iconography that one of the oldest types of painting is presented here. The relics of St. Alexei Tóth, a native of Kobylnica, are kept in the church.
In the church grounds there is a memorial to the victims of the famine in Ukraine, which was unveiled in 2006.
The Orthodox Cathedral of St. Alexander Nevsky in Presov is currently the centre of spiritual life not only of the eparchy of Prešov, but also of the whole of Slovakia. It is here that significant events in the life of the Orthodox Church in the Czech lands and in Slovakia are celebrated in a festive manner.
