Podtatranské Museum in Poprad
The museum walks visitors through the life under Tatras from prehistoric times to the present. There is also an exhibition dedicated to the Neanderthals of Gánovce.
In the main building of the Museum on Vajanského street there is an exposition on life and nature of Poprad and its surroundings from prehistoric times to the present. Visitors should look forward to the opening of a new exhibition Lord’s Tomb (Kniežacia hrobka) from Poprad. It is an exposition dedicated to a unique finding - a tomb of a Germanic lord from the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries AD. At a depth of 5 m, the roofed timber chamber with a wooden sarcophagus was perfectly preserved along with the interior furnishings, leather and textile remnants of the deceased's garment.
In the branch of Podtatranské Museum in Spišská Sobota you will find the expositions Guilds and Crafts in the History of Upper Spiš, Burgh Housing, an exhibition devoted to sacral art from the 17th - 19th centuries. Among the most valuable exhibits are metal tomb crosses of craftsmen with distinctive attributes of the craft, Madonna and Child from Spišská Teplica (14th century) and a part of a wooden altar depicting a mining scene.
