The wooden Greek Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist, Kalná Roztoka
At first glance, this church is different from other wooden churches - it is not all wooden, its walls are painted with clay and lined with lime, which gives the impression of a brick building with a wooden roof and a turret. Although this intervention violated its authenticity, the church did not lose its charm. On the contrary, it acquired an ancient appearance, which is completed by an adjacent wooden bell tower and a fence surrounding the entire complex.
The wooden church in the village of Kalná Roztoka was built in 1750. It is plastered with lime not only from the outside, but also from the inside in an effort to protect the church from adverse weather conditions. Inside the church is a valuable iconostasis from the 17th century with five rows of icon panels.
In the 19th century, the church underwent its first major renovation. Yet another one followed in the period between 2002 and 2004. The nearby wooden bell tower, which hides two bells from the 20th century, was restored shortly before the fall of socialism.
In combination with the surrounding beautiful rural environment, a visit to the church in Kalná Roztoky is an unforgettable experience.
